The Tigard Tualatin Relay For Life

Friends and colleagues, did you know that the Tigard / Tualatin Relay For Life is a pretty big deal in our business?  In addition to sponsoring this event as a company, Megan is the Event Chair (read: head honcho) and I am the Luminaria Chair and our company team walks the track and camps at the event the entire 24 hours.  I’m excited to say that this year has already been our most successful fundraising effort in the 6 years we’ve been involved the event!

What we need right now is participants and I would love to see you there!  It’s at Fowler Middle School in Tigard from 10am Saturday to 10am Sunday.  You can come for an hour or stay the entire 24!  You can come and walk, or just enjoy one of the numerous activities happening (I’ll be singing Karaoke at 7pm if you’re interested).  You can register for FREE, make a donation, or dedicate a Luminaria bag here.

If you’ve never been, our Relay is a social fundraising event where teams take turns walking around a track for 24 hours to raise money for important cancer research, transportation and lodging for cancer patients, and other vital patient services.

For the past five years, I have been in charge of the Luminaria Ceremony, which is what I think of as the emotional center of the whole experience.  It is where we all gather together together to remember the people we’ve lost, support those who are fighting, and celebrate those who have won their fight.  Even if only for now.

As the sun goes down on the day’s events, we begin to line the track with hundreds of Luminaria bags decorated by families and friends who are celebrating or remembering their loved ones.  Each bag is given a candle and, as it gets darker, those bags become the light that leads our way  during night time hours.

We all have different reasons for Relaying, but every year during our ceremony, I share one of mine.  The first year, I told the story of mother’s best friend, who I had known my whole life.  She had taken me on a “date” when I was 5 to see An American Tale and then to Chuck E. Cheese after.    She always remembered my birthday with thoughtful cards and gifts and, several years later, it was one of these presents where she had gave me the first novel that I ever truly loved.  It was a shock to all of us when we got a message that she had fallen ill while traveling the world, and she passed away a very short time later.

When I shared her story during our ceremony, we all looked out at the track and realized together that every Luminaria bag represented someone who meant as much to somebody else as she did to me.  I’m sad to say that every year since, I’ve had a new story to tell.

But our event is not about sadness, it is about HOPE, and our Relay is in no short supply of it.  When I see our progress over the last six years, I am filled with hope for the future.  In the time I have been on the committee, we have raised over $200,000 in our community and with the growth of our event, we think we can add another $100,000 this year alone.

This event isn’t always easy.  It’s a significant time commitment throughout the year and it often takes away from time our family could spend together.  But the event also gives back to us in ways we don’t expect.   From friends and family reaching out to offer words of encouragement, to forming unexpected relationships with people in our community, to showing my children what it means to be involved in a cause I believe in, Relay always find new ways to surprise me.

I hope you can join us and share the ways Relay can surprise you too.

Specialty Heating & Cooling Jingle Contest

Engaging the community, inspiring creativity, and giving a goal really worth winning is a formula proven to generate buzz and traffic around your business and we have the data to prove it!

Specialty Heating & Cooling (SHC) is an award winning family-owned and operated HVAC company based in the Portland Metro Area of Oregon. It came to us with a problem we were excited to solve. SHC asked us how can it reach others outside current avenues about its services, this can prove difficult even for a popular company within the NW.

Video entries were held open from September 15th to December 19th and submissions were to be uploaded to YouTube and posted on the SHC’s facebook page and/or Instagram using the hashtag #SHCJingleContest. Between then, SHC received three great and creative submissions from the Oregon Youth Chorale, Rock’n’Roll Camp for Girls, and the Oregon City High School Choir. Each submission was different and offered a variety of styles for voters to choose from.

We created a new page within SHC’s website that users to vote once per video everyday while voting was open, encouraging users to visit the site and increase traffic. This page allowed users to view the videos and cast their votes on one or all of the videos while the page would keep track of views and votes on the three submissions. Once the deadline was reached, voting was open from December 21st, 2016 to January 4th, 2017.

On December 21st SHC saw an incredible 1,349 sessions on their site! The whole month of December received 8,068 sessions (64.72% increase from November) with 6,277 new user sessions (63.72% increase of new users from November). We helped SHC succeed in reaching all parts of the NW, the largest viewership being in Portland, Seattle, Oregon City, Beaverton, and West Linn as well as seeing increases in viewers from Tigard, Vancouver, Hillsboro, Lake Oswego, and Tualatin. While this promotion was about the Jingle Contest, the /shcjinglecontest/ page was only second highest page in amount of traffic (1,369 new user sessions or 1,776) while its /services/special-offers/ page saw the highest traffic (2,392 new user sessions of 2,929), showing that not only were users viewing their website for the Jingle Contest but what SHC had to offer as well!

Once the voting was closed, the winner was Oregon City High School Choir! Their iteration SHC’s jingle was a combination of great videography and singing by the students. The winning video was viewed 10,899 times and received 1,224 votes. From all three videos, the total views was 16,114 and the total votes was 1,818. On SHC’s Facebook page, the posted entries received a total of 3,668 views.

Once voting was closed and all the votes had been accounted for, we wanted to utilize Facebook’s new Facebook Live feature. We notified Oregon City High School’s administration of winning SHC’s Jingle Contest and surprised the students with the $5,000 check. The Jingle Contest First Place Award Announcement video reached 10,666 people, had 6.4K views, 48 shares, 109 reactions, and 15 comments. The first place award photo reached 3,618 people, had 54 reactions, 10 comments, and 24 shares.

Even though Rock’n’Roll Camp for Girls and Oregon Youth Chorale didn’t win the grand prize SHC believed all of the entries were fun and creative! They surprised the 2nd and 3rd place winners who received $2,500 and $1,000 respectively.

The Jingle Contest left SHC with fantastic brand exposure across several different platforms and areas around the NW. It reached and engaged various demographics, whether that was the youth organization administration or the students and their parents all the while it engaged its current client base. SHC now has resources that can be used for future advertising, important data referencing, and the priceless experience of inspiring hard work and creativity.
